Frequency Specific Microcurrent

Frequency Specific Microcurrent Information and Frequently Asked Questions

Frequency Specific Microcurrent(FSM) is a treatment that delivers micro amperage currents in specific frequencies for specific durations by electrodes or graphite gloves to specific tissues.   Dr Musnick is recommending it for you to heal certain tissues and to decrease or totally resolve pain and heal your pain processing system.

Treatment Plan and Treatment Sessions

Your treatment plan will always involve a treatment with a specific program of frequency pairs that have been clinically evaluated.  You will be lying down or may be sitting up for your treatment and each treatment session will be at least 20 minutes and more commonly up to 50 minutes. If you have had a chronic problem with pain than an initial session may be longer. The program and frequency sequences are very well designed to treat various tissues and various conditions of the tissues that need to be treated to improve your condition.  Dr Musnick will choose the program or programs that will be the most likely to benefit your condition. He will record the program(s) used and the results and may use the same or different programs in future sessions.  In addition Dr Musnick may treat you off of a program with individual frequency pairs.  He may also do some joint mobilization or PNF movement patterns during your session.  You should feel free to comment how you feel during and after the session and Dr Musnick will check your tissues during the session and after the session.

Dr Musnick will tell you how many sessions may be required to treat your condition but this will usually be 2 sessions a week for 4-6 weeks.  If there is a  recent injury it may be much less treatment.  You should notice a difference by the 3-4th  treatment but consistency of treatments is important.  Chronic pain can take a concerted, consistent effort to heal

Cost of Treatment Sessions

The cost of an individual session is variable depending on the program(s) used, the use of manual frequency combinations and the manual work by Dr Musnick.  If multiple areas are treated than the cost may be higher.  If more than one program is needed the cost may be higher as the treatment times can extend greater than 45 minutes.  Dr Musnick will discuss the expected cost for the first 2 sessions with you and then the cost of future sessions can be more easily determined once your response to programs and frequencies has been evaluated.

Insurance Reimbursement Issues:

You should be aware that there is no exact code for the FSM treatment so that codes are used  which are the closest procedure codes or visit codes(99214, 99215).  The following codes may be used to try and get you reimbursed for your treatment: 97014 This is the electrical stim code.  This is the only code that can be used for the current applied to the tissues but unfortunately that code is for simple electrical stimulation and not for programs of sophisticated frequency combinations.  The code is also usually only reimbursed for 15 minute blocks and usually only 2 units can be indicated.  FSM is usually at least 45 minutes and the treatment is a lot more sophisticated than Electrical Stimulation.   The good news is that you will have very sophisticated and usually highly effective treatment but the 97014 may not adequately reimburse what you have paid at the clinic.  Other codes may be used if they are done such as 97140(manual therapy) when Dr Musnick does joint or dura mobilization and 97112 when Dr Musnick does movement and joint motion PNF patterns.  Some insurance companies will reimburse for all 3 codes and some for only one code.   It is unlikely that your insurance will reimburse for all of the codes that will be used.  You can request a letter of medical necessity and explanation of treatment but this will not insure complete reimbursement.

If you have had an auto accident please see and read our clinic policies on PIP billing and coverage of FSM.

Results of FSM

I have studied and purchased the equipment to do FSM in the clinic because I have been very impressed with the clinical testing and efficacy of FSM for musculoskeletal, nervous system and certain internal  and other medical problems.  I have had the treatment myself on numerous occasions and seen remarkable results in myself and in patients.

No treatment can be guaranteed when it comes to the human body and FSM is not guaranteed nor can the cost of treatment be refunded.  If you are not starting to see results by treatment session number 4 please inform Dr Musnick.  Please continue all of your diet, supplements and lifestyle changes that Dr Musnick has recommended. Please inform him if you start any new drugs or if you have had any change to your stress, sleep patterns or medical conditions.

What are the cellular effects of FSM that have been studied?

FSM can raise ATP production(a very important molecule of energy).  It can improve amino acid transport.  It can decrease inflammation and inflammatory cytokine molecules.  It seems to be able to effect different tissues and has the ability to decrease pain response in individual tissues as well as improve healing.  It may improve lymph drainage.

Research:  There are numerous research studies that have been done on Frequency Specific Microcurrent.  These include:

Nonpharmacologic Treatment of Neuropathic Pain Using Frequency Specific Microcurrent

Non-Pharmacologic  Treatment of Shingles

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

Myofascial Low Back Pain

Microcurrent Treatment of Pain in the Head, Neck and Face

Please go to the website for a look at the research studies

Is all Microcurrent equipment and treatment the same? No. Dr Musnick only uses Frequency Specific Microcurrent equipment that he can set the frequency pairs or FSM devices that have been programmed with sequences of frequencies researched by Dr McMakin.  It is the unique combination of individual frequencies in pairs and sequences in particular programs that can make the treatment so effective.

What FSM is not:

It is not a TENS treatment or a TENS unit

It is not single frequency electrical stimulation as done by most physical therapy clinics.

It is not acupuncture although microcurrent can be used during acupuncture.

Are there side effects?

The currents are small and there are minimal to no side effects.  Sometimes a person may feel a change in pain or nerve symptoms and may overdo things afterwards if they are feeling well.  Sometimes a person may feel certain emotions.  There are no permanent side effects known from this equipment.  Occasionally a person can have a temporary flare up especially if the pain was markedly reduced and range of motion was increased significantly. Do not over do it the day of or the day after your treatment.  Please inform Dr Musnick if you have side effects.

Training and Competency

Dr Musnick has had in person training on the theory and clinical use of FSM with Dr McMakin.  He is also in contact with other health care providers on protocols for FSM via the FSM forum. There are very few MDs that have completed the training in the US and as the protocols are changing Dr Musnick is very up to date on the protocols, programs and equipment.
