Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is a treatment that delivers micro amperage currents in specific frequencies for specific durations by electrodes or graphite gloves to specific tissues. It is recommended for patients to heal certain tissues and to decrease or totally resolve pain and heal the pain processing system.
Treatment Plan and Treatment Sessions
Your treatment plan will always involve a specific program of frequency pairs that have been clinically evaluated. You will be lying down or may be sitting up for your treatment and each treatment session will be at least 20 minutes and more commonly up to or more than 50 minutes. If you have had a chronic problem with pain, then an initial session may be longer. The program and frequency sequences are very well designed to treat various tissues and conditions in order to improve your condition. Dr. Musnick will choose the program that will be the most likely to benefit your condition. He will record the program(s) used and the results and may use the same or different programs in future sessions. He may also do some joint mobilization or PNF movement patterns during your session. You should feel free to comment how you feel during and after and Dr. Musnick will check your tissues during the session and after the session.
Dr. Musnick will tell you how many sessions may be required to treat your condition but this will usually be once a week for 4-6 weeks. If there is a recent injury it may be much less treatment. You should notice a difference by the 3-4th treatment, but consistency of treatments is important. Chronic pain can take a concerted, consistent effort to heal.
Cost of Treatment Sessions
The cost of an individual session is variable depending on the program(s) used, the use of manual frequency combinations and the manual work by Dr. Musnick. If more than one program is needed the cost may be higher as the treatment times can extend greater than 45 minutes. Dr. Musnick will discuss the expected cost for the first 2 sessions with you and then the cost of future sessions can be more easily determined once your response to programs and frequencies has been evaluated.
Please note: There is no exact code for the FSM treatment, so a procedure visit code (99213 or 99214) is used.
If you have been involved in an auto accident and believe that FSM will help with your treatment, please read our clinic policies on PIP billing and coverage of FSM, located here.
What are the cellular effects of FSM that have been studied?
- Raise ATP production (a very important molecule of energy)
- Improve amino acid transport
- Decrease inflammation and inflammatory cytokine molecules
- Affect different tissues and has the ability to decrease pain response in individual tissues as well as improve healing
- Improve lymph drainage
There are numerous research studies that have been done on Frequency Specific Microcurrent, including:
- Nonpharmacologic treatment of neuropathic pain
- Nonpharmacologic treatment of shingles
- Delayed onset muscle soreness
- Myofascial low back pain
- Treatment of pain in the head, neck and face
Is all microcurrent equipment and treatment the same?
No. Dr. Musnick only uses Frequency Specific Microcurrent equipment that he can set the frequency pairs or devices that have been programmed with sequences of frequencies researched by Dr. McMakin. It is the unique combination of individual frequencies in pairs and sequences in particular programs that can make the treatment so effective.
What FSM is not:
- It is not a TENS treatment or a TENS unit
- It is not single frequency electrical stimulation as done by most physical therapy clinics
- It is not acupuncture, although microcurrent can be used during acupuncture
Are there side effects?
The currents are small and there are minimal to no side effects. Sometimes a person may feel a change in pain or nerve symptoms and may overdo things afterwards if they are feeling particularily well. Sometimes a person may feel certain emotions. There are no permanent side effects known from this equipment. Occasionally a person can have a temporary flare up especially if the pain was markedly reduced and range of motion was increased significantly. Do not over do it the day of or the day after your treatment. Please inform Dr. Musnick if you have side effects.
Training and Competency
Dr. Musnick has had in-person training on the theory and clinical use of FSM with Dr. McMakin. He has taken the Core Training as well as the Advanced training. He teaches every year in the advanced FSM meetings. He is also in contact with other healthcare providers on protocols for FSM. There are very few MDs that have completed the training in the US and as the protocols are changing, Dr. Musnick is very up to date on the protocols, programs and equipment.
