What is Prolotherapy?
- Also called Regenerative Injection Therapy
- Injection of specific ligaments
- Done approximately every 4 weeks
- Helps your body build more, stronger ligament to stabilize joints
How does it work?
It works by releasing growth factors and creating an inflammatory reaction on the ligaments, stimulating them to go through a process in which they develop more cells, called fibroblasts, and more tissue, called collagen, to increase the size and strength of the ligaments. Healing in the ligaments goes on for weeks. It is good to stimulate the ligaments by range of motion exercises that either Dr. Musnick or your therapist will show you.
When your joints are more stable, this will help decrease joint degeneration, improve muscle function and help tissue to heal. In the majority of people, pain decreases as stability improves. The pain reduction effects can take a number of months. With an increase in stability comes an increase in function in regards to exercise and activities. This improvement in your ability to function can take a number of months to become evident.
